Steps to Becoming a Registered Nurse

2 min read

Having the proper education to become a registered nurse is essential. To be successful you should start by completing an accredited nursing education program which is recognized by the state you intend to work in.

3 Pathways of Education for an Aspiring Nurse:

1. BSN (Bachelor of Science in nursing)

2.ADN (Associate’s degree in nursing)

3.Completion of an accredited nursing diploma program

Usually, a BSN takes four years to complete, unless you choose an accelerated program. Accelerated programs typically are for students who have a previous degree. An ADN or diploma program usually takes 2 to 3 years to finish.

While it may vary from state to state, typically a BSN will allow you to advance further in your career, especially if you plan on pursuing managerial roles. All programs will include rotating through different clinical placements, where the nursing student will be supervised by an instructor to apply their knowledge and skills with patients.

Things to Consider

There are requirements to become a registered nurse beyond the course requirements stated online, or from an admissions advisor. What about the physical or mental requirements? Do you have any injuries or conditions that may affect your ability to practice?

Be prepared to have a complete physical exam before entering nursing school. You will also be tested for exposure to tuberculosis and asked if you are up-to-date on all your immunizations.

Talk to Other Nurses

Finally, it is quite likely that you know a nurse in your social circles. Do some research and ask him or her about what motivated them to pursue a career in nursing. Ask them how they prepared to study nursing and what challenges they faced. No, matter what stream you choose, being informed and prepared is the first step to pursuing a career in nursing. Now go out there and start working on your Registered Nurse Training Requirements!
