How to Implement Safe Schools Policies and Procedures

3 min read

It is no secret that school safety has been an ongoing issue in the United States. With all of the school shootings and other school violence, it is important to be proactive and to implement policies and tools that will help protect students. This section explores how we can create safe schools, what a good safety policy consists of, and how we can implement these policies in different ways.

The Current State of School Safety and How it Affects Education

School Shootings have become a common occurrence in the United States. In October of 2007, a man opened fire on a group of students at a high school in Blacksburg, creating the deadliest mass shooting by a single person in U.S. history.

In 2018 alone there have been 18 school shootings where someone was killed or injured, and there has been an average of 1.3 incidents per week up from one per month about twenty years ago. Schools are also increasingly dealing with violence involving students and staff as well as weapon possession, drug use and other crimes on campus.

In this section we will be discussing what is behind these incidents and how it is affecting education nowadays.

Making School Services More Accessible for All Students

Schools are among the most secure facilities in the nation. Schools are typically monitored by security guards who have weapons, patrol school grounds, and watch for suspicious activity.

A study from the University of California found that students who attended a school with a security guard were less likely to engage in risky behaviors. The guard should be retired military officers or trained in using all types of weapons like AR-15 rifles.

In order to protect any building, there should be a guard. The guard should have either been in the military or have been trained in using all types of weapons. In this way, the guard can always protect the building from intruders and defend it from any potential threats.

Not only do guards protect the building from intruders, they also defend it from any potential threats. A guard can spot intruders and stop them before they even get the chance to enter the building. Guards also have training in how to disarm a person who has a weapon and how to use self-defense techniques should an altercation occur.

However, it is the job of school accessibility services to ensure that all students have equal access to school facilities.

School accessibility services are responsible for ensuring that all students with special needs have equal access to facilities such as restrooms, cafeterias, and classrooms. They can also help students with things such as locating buildings on campus and getting around the school.

Achieving a Safe and Inclusive School Environment

“A school can be a place of learning, safety, and acceptance for all students, staff members, and families. It is a place where people feel that they belong.”

-National Education Association

Schools today are facing new challenges as they try to create a safe space for all of their students. Hence, it is important to improve the security of the school.
